Today I delved into a new world, a world I’ve been wanting to join but so far only had the opportunity of sneak peek-a-boo-ing at. My course in graphic design and communication kick started off at Berghs. A whole day of meeting and mingling with future creative types and other types of people. It’s our first (and almost only) meeting with each other, and the only day where we will have physical classes. Two teachers, both freelance graphic designers, and twenty seven eager students of all ages and background. Most where from different parts of Sweden. With one thing in common, everyone wanted to take a little step further into this secretive world of design and composition. Curious to discover something about oneself that one perhaps knew was there but was too scared/lazy/busy to find out earlier. Least to say it was very exciting. We went straight into the nitty gritty of typography and composition. The importance of details and working over/over/over again to get your idea right. There are a lot of things I’ve taken for granted, but which are actually active choices and decisions a designer has to make. There are certain standards and rules, and there are certain places you can break them. It’s a bit like learning a new language or code. It’s definitely not has easy at it seems. Maybe it will be like my mom learning cross-country skiing… Hopefully, I will have more luck (and energy).
But everything in our society is about communication. How do I sent my message to the receiver? I write in this blog, and hopefully you understand what I’m trying to get at. The next step is to see if I can manage to get you to get what I’m getting at visually too.
